I have been in this field for about 10 years working with people with disabilities and the amazing DSPs that work with them. Everyone will tell you it is not a field you go into to become rich. This is a field that is based on helping others and often sacrificing personal time and resources to ensure others are cared for, encouraged, and valued. I love that Help Over Hurdles recognizes the heart of DSPs and works to make them feel supported and valued. People who are willing to makes sacrifices to help others deserve all the support they can get and Help Over Hurdles is there to meet that need.

We know that when Direct Support Professionals are unable to focus on their work or feeling stressed instances of abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with a disability increase.  If through Help Over Hurdlers, we can ease a financial burden so that staff can be focused  and less anxious about their own financial situation then those DSP can focus on goal driven supports or training to improve their knowledge base.  If providing financial support and volunteer time, will achieve that goal then I am proud to be a part of Help Over Hurdles.

Michelle Weller is a music therapist working in Lafayette, IN at Opportunities for Positive Growth, Inc. Michelle previously worked as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) at a company in Pennsylvania while studying for her music therapy boards. She is thrilled to be a part of Help Over Hurdles (HOH) as a fearless advocate for DSPs and people supported (those being supported by DSPs) while striving to encourage practice and care for one's mental health; for we need to care for ourselves in order to care for others. Michelle looks forward to bridging the gap between service providers assisting people supported and all future opportunities and collaborations HOH brings!
